Maynard Ferguson was a Canadian jazz trumpeter famed for his high register playing.

Ferguson learned the piano and violin as a child and played for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Orchestra, aged 13. He took a scholarship at the French Conservatory of Music from 1943 to 1948, after which he moved to the US and played in a number of bands before he joined the renowned Stan Kenton’s Innovations Orchestra. After three years with Kenton, Maynard made a move to Paramount Pictures where,

as a studio musician, he supplied his skills to dozens of film soundtracks, including The Ten Commandments.

Maynard wanted to return to live performances and left Paramount to play at the Birdland Jazz Club in New York, as part of the Birdland Dreamband, with whom he recorded and toured between 1957 and 1967. During this time he played with a number of jazz notables, including Slide Hampton and Joe Farrell. In 1967 he wound down the band and travelled to India and the UK. While in the UK, he formed a jazz rock fusion band, releasing the MF Horn albums, and becoming a feature on BBC TV’s Simon Dee Show.

He returned to the US in 1971 and formed a new band, with whom he recorded the acclaimed Live at Jimmys album, in 1973. It was change again by 1976, and Ferguson was working with session men, recording a series of commercially successful records.

The Conquistador album included a Top 30 single in “Gonna Fly Now” which was included in the first Rocky film. The band later output involved covers of popular tunes of the day, including the Star Wars theme.

By the mid-80s Maynard had moved to playing with smaller groups, though he returned to the big band format with Big Bop Nouveau. The band was both a commercial and critical success, and he toured round the world with, what turned out to be his last group.

A few days after finishing Big Bop Nouveau’s stint at New York’s Blue Note Club in the summer of 2006, Maynard died. He left behind a back catalogue of over 60 albums. A documentary of his life is due for release in 2008.
