This performance, taped at La Scala on opening night, 1963, is a breathtaking example of true verismo performing. At the time, Giulietta Simionato had been singing for almost 30 years, and while her Santuzza hardly sounds young, she is nevertheless ideal--big-boned, left on the note and beat, with plenty of chest voice and top notes in place. Her attention to the text (and oddly, the mature sound) makes her Santuzza a very sympathetic character. Franco Corelli was in his absolute prime and the voice rings out securely and with brilliance, and he gets into this two-dimensional character like a champ. This Turiddu may be a cad, but he loves his mom, and that's just the way Mascagni wrote it. And let's face it: no tenor has come along to challenge his supremacy in sheer tonal excitement.

Gian Giacomo Guelfi's Alfio is similarly huge; in a role that allows almost no insights, he still manages to menace with his aural snarl, and the voice is an incredibly impressive instrument. The rest of the cast is fine. Gianandrea Gavazzeni leads a taut, thrilling performance. The prelude is lovely, the chorus is in excellent shape (it has plenty to do in this opera), and the nervous energy is so startling that the Intermezzo, beautifully played, is a welcome oasis of tranquility amid all the emotional carnage. The sound is surprisingly good, but certainly not up to modern standards. I still love the Scotto/Domingo/Levine set on RCA--but sorry, all other recorded performances of this work pale beside this one.
