More (v.1 and v.2) The distinction between 'Judaism' and 'Hellenism' is one which his so taken for granted by New Testament scholars that it has virtually become a foundation stone of New Testament research. Often, however, it is used extremely loosely, and passes far to lightly over the fact that by the time of Jesus Palestine, the home of Judaism, had been under Hellenistic rule for some 360 years. Even here, Hellenism had a long and eventful history behind it. That history is hard to reconstruct, because sources are scarce and the triumph first of the Maccabees and then of rabbinic Judaism has suppressed much important evidence. Moreover, modern scholarly studies in this area are fragmented and often virtually inaccessible to all but the qualified specialist. Dr Hengel gathers together an encyclopaedic amount of material, ancient and modern, to present an exhaustive survey of the early course of Hellenistic civilization, its military, social, economic, cultural and religious effects. The result is a highly readable account of a largely unfamiliar world which is indispensable for those interested in Judaism and the birth of Christianity alike.
