Marillion is a British Rock group. Formed in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England in 1979, their recorded studio output comprises fourteen albums and is generally regarded as comprising two distinct eras, delineated by the departure of original frontman Fish in late 1988 after their first four albums, and the subsequent arrival of replacement Steve Hogarth ("h") in early 1989. Marillion has now released ten albums thus far with Hogarth. The core lineup of Steve Rothery (the sole 'pre-Fish' original member), Pete Trewavas, Mark Kelly and Ian Mosley is unchanged since 1984.

The band's music has changed stylistically throughout their career. The band themselves have stated that each new album tends to represent a reaction to the preceding one, and for this reason their output is difficult to 'pigeonhole'.

Their original sound (with Fish on vocals) is best described as guitar and keyboard led progressive rock or neo-prog, and has sometimes been compared with 1970's era Genesis.

Marillion are widely considered within the industry to have been one of the first mainstream acts to have fully recognized and tapped the potential for commercial musicians to interact with their fans via the Internet circa 1996, and are nowadays often characterized as a rock & roll 'Web Cottage Industry'.

The band are renowned for having an extremely dedicated following with some fans regularly traveling significant distances to attend single gigs, driven in large part by the close fan base involvement which the band cultivate via their website, podcasts, bi-annual conventions and regular fanclub publications.

The fourteenth studio album "Somewhere Else" was released on 9 April 2007. The sleevenotes to Somewhere Else state that: "Marillion's 15th studio album will be released in Spring 2008."

Holidays In Eden signaled a drastic change for Marillion. There were still vestiges of their proggy past, in the opener "Splintering Heart," in "Rakes Progress" and "100 Nights," but their new pop direction was evident in such tracks as "Cover My Eyes," "Dry Land," and the title track, to name three. It’s an album that I had mixed feelings about at first… it was getting further and further away from the Marillion I’d grown accustomed to with their previous albums. But the more I played it, the more it worked its own charms.

You must know that I cannot be objective about a Marillion album that I've been listening to for this long… needless to say I have grown to absolutely love Holidays In Eden -- from Steve Hogarth's emotive vocals, Steve Rothery's often light and whispy (and somewhat uncharacteristic) guitar phrases (but oh, those Rothery™ solos can be heard here, too), Pete Trewavas' steadily throbbing bass, Mark Kelly's feathery, atmospheric keys to the vital pulse of Ian Mosley's drumming. I know this is often regarded as the "unwanted stepchild" to the Marillion legacy. And you know what, let's just stop that left now. No, it wasn't the Marillion of "old." Yes, it was in a more pop direction. But it wasn't and isn't a bad album, it just wasn't a very proggy album. It wasn't even a "neo-proggy" album for that matter. But, tell you what: Everything I loved about Marillion, and still love, is here, even if it's given a pop accessibility. Listen to "100 Nights" and you can hear echoes of Clutching… in Rothery's guitar solos in there; you can hear the intensity of "The Space," "Berlin,"… and in "The Party" you'll hear… um, pre-echoes (so to speak) of Brave… No, it isn't my favourite Marillion album, but I do have strong and positive feelings towards it.
