Callas fans I know you all too well: The more you have, the more you want! As almost everything has been issued and written on the Divina, true rarities or discoveries are scarse. This is a very, very interesting and original issue, a radio documentary written and produced by the late Callas biographer, musical critic, friend and confessor John Ardoin, whose "Callas Legacy" and "Callas, The Art and The Life/The Great Years" (this last one coauthored by G. Fitzgerald) are essential reading. The idea was to have a biographical, chronologically linear, portrait of the great Greek soprano, following her life through her own and her colleugues' and friends' interviews, statements and confessions, with the addition of relevant musical material. Callas speaks extensively on her origins, early life, teachers and mentors, collegues, favorite roles, just about everything IMPORTANT. The result is not only absolutely informative, serious and intelligent, it is also very touching as it contains excerpts from the much discussed "Ardoin Tapes", a lenghty and dramatic de profundis confession Callas made to her friend, on September 1968, in Dallas, just after the end of her affair with Onassis. There is nothing scandalous about them whatsoever, only a broken woman's thoughts on her life, her art and her lifelong fight to crush her demons. Other, above mentioned, Maria's recorded statments and lots of telling anecdotes from collegues and friends, as well as excerpts from her live performances, make Ardoin's documentary a just tribute to the artist and the woman, and by someone who knew and loved both profoundly.
