Charpentier's Leçons de Ténèbres are profoundly devotional, sincerely religious, perhaps even more spiritual than the Tenebrae music of Gesualdo or Victoria.

Leçons de ténèbres (“Lessons of Darkness”) refers to the early-morning prayer services matins and lauds in Holy Week for the three days preceding Easter Sunday. Technically, the service should begin at midnight on those days; “tenebrae” therefore refers to the darkness during which the service is celebrated. In addition, a triangular candlestick with 15 candles was placed near the altar, and at the end of each psalm or canticle, one of the candles was extinguished, until only the candle at the top remained burning. At a very early date, for the sake of convenience, it became the custom to celebrate these three offices on the afternoon of the preceding day.

Matins, the first part of the ceremony, was divided into three nocturns, each of which has two parts: three psalms with their antiphons and three lessons with their responsories. The notes to this recording tell us that the first nocturn, in which the lessons are based on the biblical Lamentations of Jeremiah, and the responses on the last hours of Christ provided composers with their best opportunities for musical settings.
