Many people have helped with this book. It started life as a doctoral thesis, and I am deeply grateful to my supervisor, C. A. Hooker, who provided much stimulating conversation, constructive criticism, and, above all, encouragement when I most needed it.

I am indebted to a great many scholars, most known to me only through their work, who have influenced me over the yearsperhaps most to Stephen Jay Gould, whose works provided many an interesting lead, and whose delightful prose, intellectual integrity, and insatiable curiosity were an inspiration.

Many friends and colleagues read some or all of the book at various stages. Their encouragement and criticism has been invaluable. I particularly thank Michael Carrithers, Bernd Baldus, Peter Quartermaine, Stephen Crook, John Bern, Geoffrey Samuel, and Kai Hahlweg, Steve Fuller, Peter Manicas, and Lenore Langsdorf. But their advice was not all heeded, and I alone take responsibility for flaws in the finished product.

My husband, Ross Jenkins, helped me to select and produce the photographs. I thank him. I also thank him, John Nethery, Steve Fraser (CSIRO Exploration & Mining), AUSLIG (Australia's National Mapping Agency), the Department of Geology, University of Newcastle, and the Queensland Department of Minerals and Energy for permission to use their photographs. Much editing and proofreading of early drafts was done by my husband Ross, brother Simon, and friend Dorrit Nesmith. I cannot thank them enough. The job was to have been done by my journalist father Denis Butler, but sadly he died before I could give him more than the first chapter. I tried to apply to the rest what I learned from his comments, but I miss his savage pencil. This book is dedicated to his memory.
