This work is a slight revision of a thesis presented for the PhD in Biblical Studies at the University of Sheffield in March 1990. The revision consists primarily of minor corrections and of an updating of the footnotes based on further reading over the last year. This study, like the original thesis, is a product of the desire to understand better how to allow the Old Testament to speak within Latin America and reflects the twin focii of this interest: on the one hand, the locating of biblical study and theological reflection within the complex cultural realities of that continent; on the other, the articulating of a possibly fruitful textual method, hi both areas my study has been motivated to a certain extent by the conviction of the need to offer alternative approaches to those of Latin American liberation theologians. Hopefully, this dialogue and interaction with that broad modern current can demonstrate both an appreciation of its theoretical and methodological insights, as well as facilitate discussion in new areas. A word is in order about the reading of the prophetic text. No original translation of the Hebrew text is offered. In general the wording of the RSV is followed, except where the exegesis suggests changes. The transliteration reproduces only the consonants of the Masoretic Text.

This effort would not have been possible without the help of many people too numerous to mention here. I would like to single out, however, three groups of people to whom I owe a particular debt.

First, a word of appreciation is due to the Biblical Studies Department at the University of Sheffield, whose openness to new ideas and concern for methodology make for a creative environment within which to work. I offer a special word of thanks to my advisor, Professor John Rogerson, who models an exemplary integration of careful Old Testament scholarship, a keen interest in ethics, and a commitment to the Christian church.

Second, I would also like to express my gratitude to the assistance granted by friends in Guatemala. Kelvin St John graciously dedicated untold hours on his computer to help get the thesis ready for submission and its revision for publication. Gary Williams, despite his heavy administrative load as rector of El Seminario Teologico Centroamericano and his own thesis preparation, interacted with the reading of Amos. David Suazo J. and Guillermo W. Mendez, two Guatemalan colleagues and dear friends, have been constant and stimulating companions in a shared pilgrimage to bring the Bible to life in our context.

Lastly, and most importantly, I thank from the depths of my heart my two sons, Matthew and Adam, who have been so patient with a father who has been too busy, and my wife Joan, without whose faithful encouragement and support this project never would have been completed.
