Jobs and enterprise are central to creating neighbourhoods with a sustainable economic future. Yet despite the emphasis within current policy agendas upon the need to view the problems of localised deprivation in an integrated and holistic manner, in practice promoting a strong economic basis for deprived neighbourhoods has remained an elusive challenge. The marginal impacts of successive regeneration programmes and policies in the UK reflect both a failure to adequately understand the nature of the economic challenge as well as the difficulties of designing and delivering policies operating across spatial levels which are sensitive to local differences. Through a combination of original research and a wide ranging review of recent research and policy practice, this book provides a comprehensive overview of the economic development issues central to the renewal of deprived neighbourhoods.By identifying the nature of the economic problems that beset deprived neighbourhoods and considering the range of employment and enterprise related policy initiatives that have been developed in response, this book provides critical insights into what does and doesn't work in the economic regeneration of deprived neighbourhoods.
