The contents of this monograph represent about one-third of the material the author presents in a first-year graduate course in complex variables. The course evolved (and continues to do so) over several years and has for its goals (1) a thorough grounding in analytic function theory.. (2) the acquain- tance of the student with the frontiers of knowledge in certain areas in analysis, and (3) the familiarization of the student with some of the litera- ture, stressing both recent works and historical patterns. Involved with these goals are certain pedagogics which we won't discuss here but which may appear in various places within this monograph.
