Pascal Humbert has been playing in David Eugene Edward’s bands (Wovenhand and 16 Horsepower) for quite some time now. Lilium is the outlet that Humbert uses to get his own music out into the stratosphere. ‘Felt’ is the third Lilium release after instrumental debut, ‘Transmission of All Goodbyes’ and its follow up ‘Short Stories’.

Interestingly, Humbert does not consider himself a singer so the Lilium sound relies on guest singers (on this occasion Kal Cahoone and Hugo Race) to provide the bands vocal identity. As a Frenchman transplanted to the Mojave Desert it is slightly bizarre that Humbert’s songs sound like a downbeat Calexico, but like that band Humbert is able to build an ambience without relying too much on conventional song structure.

Some of the highlights of ‘Felt’ include atmospheric opener, ‘left Where you Are’, the instrumental title track, and the beautifully brooding ‘Lily Pool’. Throughout the album Humbert weaves complex musical stories using pedal steel, trumpet, dobro and violin in addition to more convetional rock instrumentation. Ultimately, it is questionable as to how well 'Felt' works as a standalone album. However, if Humbert can get some of these tunes attached to film scores, the effects could be extremely beneficial. <americana-uk.com>
