The image seen through a microscope is not a magnified point-by-point representation of the object, but is an abstract representation of the object that must be interpreted. This interpretation is influenced not only by the actual structure of the object, but the physical characteristics of light and the microscope components, the preparation of the sample, and the microscopist's background. In order to interpret the image correctly and fully, the microscopist must understand the interaction of light with the sample.
