Part of the ARTE TV "2000 Seen By" series (six movies from different countries containing the visions of different filmmakers of what the end of the 20th century), "Les Sanguinaires" is about a group of Parisian people who decide to avoid all the hype of the new millennium and spend that time on an isolated, rustic Corsican island. In December of 1999, François organizes a retreat to a small island for himself, some friends, and their children to avoid the craziness of Paris during the turn of the millennium. Things quickly become tense between François and the young man who is the island's caretaker. Boredom and bickering add to the growing foreboding, sexual tensions and jealousies emerge...

S’attachant dans ses films à décrypter les relations de l’individu avec la société et répondant avec ce moyen-métrage à la commande d'ARTE de tourner une fiction sur le thème du passage à l'an 2000, Laurent Cantet a filmé, plutôt que la célébration générale, l'évasion d'une bande d'amis sur une île.
