Les Misérables - 10th Anniversary Concert (1996) {Live at The Royal Albert Hall}

& 8220;Info from Wikipedia:

Les Misérables: The Dream Cast in Concert a.k.a. Les Misérables in Concert is a concert version of the musical Les Misérables, produced to celebrate its 10th anniversary. It was filmed in October 1995 at the Royal Albert Hall and released on DVD and VHS in 1998 and re-released on DVD in North America in 2008. It stars Colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean, Philip Quast as Inspector Javert, Michael Ball as Marius Pontmercy, Lea Salonga as Éponine, Judy Kuhn as Cosette, Ruthie Henshall as Fantine, and several others, and was directed by John Caird. The performers were chosen from London, Broadway and Australian productions of the show.

This presentation uses a "modernized" and more orchestrated Alain Boublil–Claude-Michel Schönberg score than that of the musical. The format is closer to that of a dramatic cantata rather than being fully staged; the singers stand at their microphones with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and chorus behind them, but they do wear costumes and participate in some movement. During the action scenes, the video switches to action from the stage production.

A few scenes from the musical are not included in the concert, including the street brawl broken up by Javert, "The Death of Gavroche" and the confrontation between Marius and Thénardier at the wedding feast.

The end of the programme comes to a dramatic conclusion when seventeen international Jean Valjeans take to the stage to each sing a few bars of "Do You Hear the People Sing?" in their native languages. They are then joined by the entire cast and choir to sing the last verse of "One Day More!", receiving applause and a standing ovation. Balloons and confetti fall from the ceiling and sparklers erupt on stage as the show finishes.

the best CD that I own

If you only buy one Les Mis CD then BUY THIS ONE!! Granted it is not the complete version (ok so you'll have to go buy that one too) but just the raw talent of the performers on this recording is amazing.

Philip Quast has one of the most powerful voices that I have ever heard and it fits perfectly with Javert's character. "Stars" is my favorite song mainly for that reason.

Colm Wilkinson of course is the best Valjean out there. Sometimes his little rips at the end of a sustained note are annoying but his performance of "Bring Him Home" is the best.

And finally Lea Salonga is simply perfect as Eponine. She has a powerful yet very sweet voice that conveys Eponine's sadness without sounding whiny. Her performance of "On My Own" is nothing short of FANTASTIC and is giving Quast's performance of "Stars" a run for its money in my mind. Lea Salonga is quickly becoming one of my favorite singers and this recording is what first got my attention about her.

Overall, this recording is the best Les Mis recording out there. To get the whole story buy the Complete Symphonic Recording but for just pure enjoyment in listening, you MUST get this one!

What makes this the best album for me? The combination of the excellent cast and the extended length. This concert was an abridged version of the play, and the live performances give it a certain energy that the other albums lack. Certain scenes are missing, like Javert's Intervention, but you can still follow the plot. Now it's hard for me to listen to the Broadway and London albums without thinking about how short the tracks are. Many cast members are clearly too old for their parts, but who cares? They sound great!

In general, I like the male cast members better on this album than the London Album. Colm Wilkinson's performance is a little weaker, but he is still better than Gary Morris from the Complete Symphonic Recording. Michael Ball plays an excellent Marius, as usual. Michael Maguire is the patriotic Enjolras, and Alun Armstrong gives an even better performance as Thenardier this time around. But the real show stealer here is Philip Quast as Javert. This man can act intensely as well as sing beautifully. His version of Stars is my favorite song out of all four Les Mis recordings. It helps to watch the performance on the DVD. The look on his face is always so intense. His Javert is someone you don't want to mess with. I must also compliment the Bishop. His role may be small but he is one of the highlights of the album for me.

I find the women to be better on the London Album, except for Jenny Galloway. She's hilarious as Madam Thenardier. While all the female cast members give respectable performances, I find Lea Salonga's Eponine to be a little robotic. Ruthie Henshall is a decent Fantine but I just don't think her voice is nearly as good as LuPone's, but I seem to be in the minority. Judy Khun is probably the best lady in the cast, she makes a very good Cosette. But all in all this album has a well balanced cast; there is not a severely weak link in the chain like in the London and Broadway albums. The songs are backed up by a very large chorus, made up of former Les Mis cast members, which makes each song seem epic.

Another reason to buy this album is the performance of "Do You Hear the People Sing" by an international cast of Jan Val Jeans. Each performer only has one line but it is fun to compare them. The Irish Jean val Jean really blew everyone else out of the water. From the Japanese singer's performance I would imagine the whole play must sound very nice in Japanese.

The album has a few flaws. As I mentioned before, Colm Wilkinson's performance is inferior to his earlier performances. A balloon pops during "Castle on a Cloud." I do not listen to that song very often but if it is one of your favorites I would imagine it would be very annoying. The great Michael Maguire cracks on a few high notes, unfortunately.

Nevertheless if you are going to buy one Les Mis album, this should be it. Great sound quality, great cast, great orchestra.
