More Les Automitrailleuses De Reconnaissance: L Amr 33 Renault By Francois Vauvillier C'est pourquoi il est utile, avant d'entrer dans le vif du sujet, d'évoquer ce qu'est la reconnaissance, puis de passer brièvement en revue les différents véhicules qui ont été employés ou envisagés à cet effet durant la dizaine d'années précédant l'adoption des AMR (automitrailleuses de reconnaissance). Dans la cavalerie, la mission de reconnaissance est ainsi définie \ au plus petit niveau : « un chef ayant des renseignements précis à recueillir, disposant d'un personnel restreint (conducteurs, éclaireurs, estafettes), libre de toute servitude quant au choix des moyens [...] Voir, ne pas être vu, ne pas rechercher le combat, renseigner en temps voulu. » S'agissant de la reconnaissance à plus haut niveau, la cavalerie a pour rôle de renseigner les grandes unités d'infanterie, au moyen de détachements constitués en leur sein. Cette mission, assurée en 1914 par deux escadrons de réserve dans chaque division d'infanterie, est revue à la hausse en 1923, lorsque sont créés les groupes de reconnaissance (GR) de division d'infanterie (GRDI) et de corps d'armée (GRCA). Il s'agit cette fois d'unités formant corps, pouvant compter jusqu'à quatre (puis cinq) escadrons combattants, mais qui ne sont appelées à être effectivement formées qu'à la mobilisation. Encore faut-il en prévoir dès le temps de paix la mise sur pied, et bien sûr les approvisionnements en matériels.
