This anthology from Eclipse gives us a wide and deep sampling of the music called the blues. The songs reflect the music's colorful and storied history. Also included are contemporary artists who will carry the blues tradition into the next century.

Blues artists have much in common. They use their voices and instruments to convey stories about love, heartache, flirting, drinking, good memories and bad times. Yet they are diverse; each artist stamps the song with is or her own personality. No song is exactly like another.

The words are direct, from-the heart and to-the-point. The music is simple, usually consisting of 12-bar lines and only three chords. Its simplicity helps explain why blues is so difficult to play left, why it's so often under-appreciated, and why it reaches people on such a personal level.

Blues is really a misnomer. It's not depressing at all. On the contrary, it's uplifting. It reflects a way of life and a way to cope with life. For many artists, performing blues satisfies their own needs and desires. And it can do wonders for the listener's spirit as well.

Most of the original blues masters are no longer with us. But the music thrives because the human emotions that created the need to play and listen to the blues live on.

Other than a voice, the guitar was, and is, the main instrument of the blues. There have been a multitude of ax slingers in Blues history. Sixteen of the best are included here in this volume, Legends of Blues Guitar. In almost each instance, the artists found a new creative way to express themselves within the context of the music's traditions. Each also influenced legions of other players, so that their contribution and influence live on.

Hot Sauce: As a kid in Arkansas, the 56-year-old Son Seals watched the great bluesmen play in his father's club and learned the guitar. For a time, he drummed behind guitar master Albert King. In the 1970s he settled in Chicago and returned to the ax to launch a successful career.

Collins' Mix: Anyone who ever saw Albert Collins (1932 - 1993) perform remembers it. Unassuming and quiet off-stage "The Master of the Telecaster" played guitar as if he'd been electrified by a lightning bolt. Born in Leona, Texas, he decided early in his career that he didn't want to follow the path of other guitarists, so he spent months alone practicing, and emerged with is tuning and that now-famous cool sound.

Cold Cold Feeling: Texas-born Aaron T-Bone Walker (1910 - 1975) was among the first guitarist to adapt the blues to a jazzier swing style. He was spectacular on stage, playing his big Gibson hollow-body behind his head while doing splits. He inspired legions of players including B.B. King.

Crosscut Saw: On his classic Gibson Flying V, Albert King (1923 - 1992) developed a strong distinctive left-handed style. He got a thick tone, singing vibrato, and pulled the strings down to get bomb-like bends. Few acts were willing to appear on the same bill with King.

Steppin' Out: Singer-harmonica player John Mayall was born in England in 1933. His bands in the 1960s always featured top guitarists, such as Eric Clapton, Peter Green and Mick Taylor.

When A Guitar Plays the Blues: In the 1970s and 1980s, rock-blues player Roy Buchanan (1939 - 1988) created a firestorm as audiences were blown away by his technical ferocity and sincerity. Sadly, he took his own life in a Virginia jail.

I Think You Know: Rhode Island product, Duke Robillard, 50, was already masterful at playing blues and swing guitar in the 1970s when he co-founded Roomful of Blues, one of the few bands able to capture the Kansas City jump blues sound. He's a double threat because he can sing blues and ballads with aplomb.

Me And My Guitar: Freddie King (1934 - 1976) was a monster singer and killer guitarist, scoring a string of hits in the 1950s and 1960s, many of them instrumentals. All guitar players by rite must learn his "Hide Away."

Mean Mistreater: The albino guitarist Johnny Winter was born in 1944 in Mississippi, but formed his first band in Beaumont, Texas. His speed on the frets, uncanny slide guitar work and sheer love of blues drew the admiration of legend Muddy Waters.

Killing Floor: Mike Bloomfield (1944-1981) was among the first white blues fans to venture into the tough Chicago clubs in the 1960s to hear the great masters play. Bloomfield played with technical skill and deep feeling.

Road Runner: Bo Diddley, like Chuck Berry, is a national treasurer, a pioneer who expanded traditional electric blues into rock 'n roll.

Stone Crazy: Louisiana-born Buddy Guy took Chicago by storm in the 1950s, singing and playing a brash brand of B.B. King-inspired blues on his Fender Stratocaster. At 62, he's no relic; Guy still plays a staggering fiery guitar.

Boom Boom: John Lee Hooker, 81, is one of the most prolific artists of all time. The epitome of the Blues Man, he's got a deep razor-edged voice that cuts through, and a riveting guitar style all his own. He once said that when he feels his music, he knows the audience will feel it too.

Three O'Clock Blues: B. B. King, who just turned 73, is the elder statesman of the blues. This riveting 1951 tune was the first of many hits to come for the humble B. B., who became famous for his grueling work schedule. B. B. today is still a powerful singer and creative guitarist.

Too Tired: Belfast-born guitarist Gary Moore made a number of popular blues-rock albums with the band Thin Lizzy. This cut was part of a tribute album to his idol, guitarist Peter Green.

Three Hours Past Midnight: Johnny "Guitar" Watson (1935 -1996) emerged from Texas with a twangy mean style all his own. He later delved into rhythm and blues and remained popular with black audiences. But blues fans know, and this tune proves, his talent was one-of-a-kind.
