Four acting students study with the high-class acting coach Constance Dumas and live together in a big Paris house. One by one, a mysterious man approaches the girls, asking questions and telling tales about their former housemate -- implying that she may have kept some sinister secrets. Something hidden in the house attests to this. At the same time, the girls struggle in their tough acting class, trying to please the hard-as-nails teacher.

Jacques Rivette's 1988 film Gang of Four is a kind of summation of the elusive auteur's style and thematic concerns, a skillful variation on the various threads that wove through his work of the preceding three decades. It encompasses his passion for the theater, his taste for esoteric conspiracies with many dangling loose ends, his way of using acting and dramatization to peel away the layers of a character over time, his playful improvisatory spirit and fondness for whimsical ghost stories. The film is a deliberately paced — but never plodding — character study of a group of young girls studying acting under the watchful eye of the demanding instructor Constance. The main action especially centers around one particular quartet of girls living in the same house.

Depuis plusieurs années, Constance Dumas, professeur d'art dramatique très cher et très renommé, n'accepte pour disciples que des jeunes filles. Quatre élèves de son cours, Claude, Joyce, Anna et Lucia, habitent ensemble un pavillon de banlieue. Une cinquième, Cécile, les a quittées pour vivre avec un mystérieux jeune homme que personne n'a jamais vu.

Un soir, Anna est sauvée d'une agression par un inconnu qui l'interroge sur Cécile et sous-entend que celle-ci est tombée sous la coupe d'un louche individu. Sous une autre identité, le même inconnu avait déjà opéré une semblable démarche auprès de Joyce. Il récidive avec Claude qui, loin de se méfier, tombe éperdument amoureuse de lui.

L'homme - Thomas - est en réalité un policier. Il est sur la trace du petit ami de Cécile, Antoine Lucas, un repris de justice qui n'a cessé de proclamer son innocence. Pour sa défense, Antoine a mis à l'abri dans un coffre des documents impliquant de hauts magistrats dans une affaire de pots-de-vin. Et c'est pour mettre la main sur la clé du coffre que Thomas a courtisé les trois amies et fini par s'installer chez elles. La clé, en fait, a été découverte par Lucia. Lorsque Thomas s'en empare, les jeunes filles se liguent pour l'empêcher de quitter le pavillon et d'avoir accès à des documents qui peuvent aider à innocenter Antoine.
