More Know Your Lathe by Denfords Engineering The lathe, most important of machine tools, is the one that has made most of the others possible. It is the basic fact behind Britain's great engineering industry. Much progress has followed since Henry Maudslay incorporated the principles of the screw cutting lathe in the small lathe he built about 1797. yet all the later developments have been built upon his firm foundation. Modern bench lathes. some types of which are illustrated in Figs. I and 2 embody a set of independent change gears: hence their description as standard change gear lathes. Such gears can be used to connect the headstock spindle with the lead screw so that the operative can cut various pitches of screw threads. They are also used to obtain a series of power longitudinal turning feeds. The cross-feed for the lathe. shown in Fig. 2 can also be power-operated through a friction clutch and a series of gears in the apron. Fig. 3 shows the end view of a standard change gear bench lathe, together with the gearing to connect the headstock spindle with the lathe's lead screw. Almost any pitch of screw thread can be cut if the gears are arranged in the left way. The change gein are also employed to obtain a wide range of power cross feeds and power longitudinal feeds for turning and facing operations. The standard change gear type of lathe is widely used in small shops. It is popular in such establishments because it is cheaper than the quick change gear lathes. It is also in widespread use where the type of production involves few changes of threads and feeds. For this class of work it surpasses the quick change gear lathe because, once it is set up with the proper feeds for an operation, the adjustments are not so easily tampered with or changed.
