This book explains and illustrates how pumice can be processed using simple technologies suitable for developing countries. Pumice, an extremely light, porous raw material of volcanic origin, occurs in deposits around the world and, as traditionally used on a local scale, can be a versatile building material. A lack of useful information exists on the subject of elementary pumice processing techniques for producing building blocks, slabs, and panels. This handbook contributes to filling that gap by translating technical expertise into a straightforward, easy-to-learn set of instructions and practical suggestions. The expertise is mainly from some of the authors' experiences in El Salvador, Guatemala, Ecuador, and Rwanda regarding the use of pumice as a building material.
