Kill That Girl - ...We Wanna Be Monkeys!!!

As far as I'm concerned, Kill That Girl are one of the leading acts the Italian scene has to currently offer the pop-punk world... but no one knows it yet. Alongside the Manges who have been championing the art of writing tuneful classics for quite some time now, the Teenage Gluesniffers who claim a harder, melodic power pop take on the genre and the newly arrived surf pop Veterans, the band takes notes from pop-punk's past and present and revises their hearty recipe (elements influenced by the aforementioned) to no end, and dishes up a wholesome mash up of everything desirable in this current wave of bands; this E.P, like a rich Sunday roast, has everything you'll ever need.

We Wanna Be Monkeys!!! is short, but seems to cover all of my insatiable needs: high octave leads, catchy rhyming (see: "Stupid Bitches" and when the working day is done, "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" - written by Cyndi Lauper, performed wonderfully here), aggressive-but-poppy-all-the-same vocals (a feature not any Tom, Dick or Harry, or Terzo, Dante or Hieronomo in this case, can pull off), the occasional Ramonescore nodding of the head to the oldies, and as irrelevant as it seems, a cool, thematic movie soundbyte for an intro track. It also becomes apparent in the song "Stupid Bitches" that these guys have been paying some attention to the Dopamines. A zip-by cover of one of the Manges' standout hits "Oh, Mary," supported by Andrea Manges himself on backing vocals, leaves me to ponder on which version I prefer, the original or the one rocked on this here E.P.

Kill That Girl, one of many bands in an obscure position even in this anonymous punk community we call "the underground," are unfortunately an unknown identity in this mostly un-rocking musical era along with many other great bands just trying to make it. If there was any justice in this world, their success would be inevitable - and for good reasons.
