Lyrics & Music Kevin Fowler - Bring It On (2007)

More Kevin Fowler "Bring It On" 2007 | Genre: Country | Songwriter Kevin Fowler makes 100% pure country music. Not the slick, homogenized stuff that tends to dominate the country radio airwaves today, but the country music that keeps the throngs dancing and drinking in the honky-tonks, dancehalls, nightclubs, roadhouses, and cantinas across the land. So, when Kevin Fowler, the Amarillo-born, Austin-bred country star and undisputed king of the drinking song, claims to come from a "long line of losers," please believe, this Texan’s words weren’t the only thing loaded during production. Fowler's fourth studio release, Bring It On, falls in place comfortably with a long line of winners and eminent dance hall anthems like "100% Texan," "Ain't Drinkin' Anymore" and "Loose, Loud and Crazy." Bring It On is pure Texas country, riddled with wry temperament and songs that successfully emulate country legend, Waylon Jennings (also a Texan). "Honky Tonk Junkie," a riposte to Jennings’ “Honky Tonk Heroes," is a fiery ode to the tonk, and the befitting title track tells bootlickers and ill-wishers to "Bring It On." "Long Line of Losers," the now infamous, well-circulated radio single, bolsters the outlaw reputation. The traditional bluegrass stomp, outfitted with violins and deep snare crashes, flows slowly into a boisterous sing-along that, in the end, praises Fowler’s scum-bottom roots. What’s more, Kevin Fowler flaunts the wiliness of great country song writing, cleverly churning our imaginations with each lyrical anecdote. Not to mention he actually writes the darn things. Writing or co-producing all but three songs on a full-length record in a time of guileless ghostwriting to get rich is a feat within itself. Hank Williams, the archetype of outlaw country, proclaimed, "You can't make it if you fake it; you've got to live it." On songs like "Cheaper to Keep Her," Fowler does so shamelessly with a quick witted chagrin. Ironically, it's difficult to nitpick flaws within Bring It On, Fowler's subjective attempt to sneer at himself and humorously reinvent his roots. The backside of the album depicts a smirking Fowler, propped up with a cowboy hat, crucifix belt buckle and a haunting black T-shirt with the word "Affliction" tattooed across the front. If Fowler's fortuitous upbringings and ensuing national success as a "half-outlaw, half-boozer" are signs of affliction, please sign me up. Alas, the fuss and clamor about the new Kevin Fowler album is true, or at least half true (minus the wild exaggerations). Regardless, Bring It On proves to be a bloodless coup of the country music circuit as Fowler exploits his “unfortunate” past.
