Caitlin freundet sich mit Lucas an und beginnt sich sogar in ihn zu verlieben. Zugleich muss sie miterleben, wie ihm die Erwachsenen alle krummen Dinger in die Schuhe schieben wollen, die in der Gegend passieren, und wie die tonangebende Jugendclique ihn verspottet und verfolgt. Auch Caitlin selbst zieht nun Hass auf sich und gerät in Gefahr. Und es kommt immer schlimmer: Eben noch galt Lucas schlicht als unerwünschter Herumtreiber, dann unterstellt man ihm, er habe ein kleines Mädchen belästigt, das er in Wirklichkeit vorm Ertrinken gerettet hat. Als auf der Insel eine junge Frau ermordet in den Dünen gefunden wird, ist für Caitlin erschütternd klar, was passieren wird.
