The opera tells the story of Venus and Adonis. At the beginning of Act I Venus seeks advice from the marine deity Proteus, who prophesies to her that Adonis will become immortal while she will wish for death. He also tells her that Adonis should be be careful not to go hunting. The couple, something of a mismatch in that she is a goddess while he is only a handsome, mortal shepherd, are viewed with jealousy by the other characters. Mars, the god of war, is the worst here; he cannot in any way allow this relationship and in his raging jealousy seeks an opportunity to kill the shepherd. For his part, the handsome Adonis has more admirers than just Venus, namely the shepherdesses Eumene and Dryante. While Eumene constantly tries to put off the advances of Philistus, a shepherd who is devoted to her, and sheds many tears of love for Adonis in tormenting grief, Dryante's love turns to hate, and, bent on revenge, she enters into an alliance with the wrathful Mars. And then there is the merry shepherd Gelon, who does not at all understand why everybody is so excited about love, grief, and jealousy. Without being asked to do so, he keeps on offering his words of wisdom on the topic of "love, lovers, and women in particular". At the end of Act II Philistus invites Adonis to hunt, and Adonis greatly desires to go with him. Venus, who still remembers very well Proteus' warnings, tries everything to keep her lover from participating in this dangerous adventure. Nevertheless, Philistus and Adonis go out to the melancholy farewells of the rest of those present. At the beginning of Act III the female characters Venus, Dryante, and Eumene dialogue and dispute about love. In the midst of this exchange of opinions, news is brought of Adonis' death. A wild boar, incited by Mars, has killed the young hunter. In her immense grief Venus laments that she too no longer wishes to live. She nonetheless has to recognize that she, as a goddess, cannot die. When Dryante finally confesses to the mourners that she was in league with Mars, Venus does not kill her but, as a greater punishment, turns her alive into an oak. Finally, the goddess decrees that Eumene will no longer play the coy mistress but submit to the pining Philistus. Venus' tears turn into anemones, and Adonis' body into a rosebush. Venus declares that the rose is the queen of flowers, and it is thus that Adonis attains the immortality foretold for him.
