The new release by Chicago-based percussionist/composer and educator Kahil El'Zabar and his Ritual Trio represents a continual immersion into the pool of creative jazz music that continually pours out of The Windy City. Afrocentric to the core, the seven tunes are a heartfelt tribute to former Trio and Art Ensemble of Chicago bassist Malachi Favors, who passed away in 2004. Leading off the disc is the funk vamp of "Crumb-Puck-U-Lent" featuring the plaintative wailing of saxophonist Ari Brown as he calls out to the sorely missed Favors, joined by the musings of guest, violinist Billy Bang. On the floating-on-air "Oof" and "Big M," El'Zabar employs the delicate, haunting sound of the kalimba, or African thumb piano, an instrument brought into the general public consciousness in the 1970's by fellow Chicagoan Maurice White of Earth, Wind and Fire. Billy Bang's composition "Freedom Flexibility" is a fun-filled Latinish tune that would not sound out of place on a salsa dance floor. The entire band settles into a spirited, gently swinging African vibe on "Kau" and "Maghoustut" with the searching violin of Bang, along with Brown and bassist Yosef Ben Israel, taking turns fingering and blowing hard and long over pulsating, non stop conga and bass-centered grooves. Ending with El Zabar's vocal self-penned tribute to Favors, "Malachi," the leader, doubling on flute El'Zabar, relays his deep love for his dear friend and musical comrade.
