For Juan Diego Flórez the songs on this album are much more than a light-hearted detour for a great opera star. In his view they have enriched and, to a great extent, molded his art 'You have to let your guts out, forget a bit about your voice, and mean what you're saying'. Flórez grew up with this music - his father Ruben Flórez had a fine career in Peru as an interpreter of popular songs, and in particular the songs of Chabuca Granda, known as 'the soul of Peru'.

"We children were sent to sleep but I remember peeking and seeing my family playing guitar, percussion...everybody sang and my Mother and Aunt danced". Flórez eventually started to sing in his local bar where he was expected to know songs not just from Peru, but also from Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico and all over Latin America.

All the major tenors - Caruso, Tito Schipa, Jussi Bjorling - sang music from their roots. Opera stars of the past have also sung many of the songs on this album, including Flórez's fellow Peruvian Luigi Alva (who also recorded for Decca) and the great Spanish Tenor Alfredo Kraus

Many of these songs make full use of Flórez astonishing vocal technique which has taken him to all the great opera houses from Buenos Aires to Moscow. He sees the songs of Argentina's Carlos Gardel as the Latin equivalent of the classical songs of Schubert or Schumann and says of another Mexican song - "If you try to sing Júrame without a trained voice, you're going to die!"
