This is in actual fact the fourth record from Chicago’s JT and The Clouds and what a little cracker ‘Caledonia’ is too. It is hard to know where to start with this record, there is such a mix of style and genres about that it really stands up on its own.

From the top, starting with ‘Fever Dream’ and opening with a perfectly country-esque guitar lick and a gospel sounding vocal suddenly breaking into to chorus with fire cracker snares, a big brass section and the vocal being torn from JT’s throat. Immediately you are hooked with a track like this, straight away ‘Caledonia’ is interesting, enjoyable and on it goes with one brilliantly compelling song after another.

The album slows down for ‘I Have Heard Words’ which really emphasises JT’s superbly soulful vocal. There is a wonderful strolling rhythm with delicate horns in the background that it makes you feel like you are wandering through woodlands on a beautiful sunny day with the light flickering between the trees. ‘Playin’ Dozens’ begins with a similar effect but builds into a long winding guitar solo to add the big country aspect again. ‘How It Runs’ is like a random jam session that just so happens to have a song in the middle; and then comes the album title track ‘Caledonia’ which just throws you left back to Crosby, Stills and Nash. It starts with a rough county stomp, a little dark sounding then the inevitable build up to the big chorus, solos and backing oo’s then winding all the way down again. The album finally finishes up with the long, slow ‘Nobody Wants To Be Alone Nobody Wants To Die’ which, compared to the rest of the record, is quite a bare ballad.

'Caledonia' is ten songs of something a little bit country, a little bit soul, a slight jazziness, a glug of Motown and it is all wrapped up with tenderness. ‘Caledonia’ undoubtedly flies the flag of all JT’s influences and quite shamelessly too, there are moments of nostalgia hidden away but still gives a modern pop hint. <americana-uk 9/10>
