A 1974 live effort recorded with backing band The L.A. Express, Miles Of Aisles consists of fairly straightforward versions of songs from the Canadian songstress's first five (pre Court And Spark) albums. Although the record includes some soulful, Santana-esque lead guitar work from Robben Ford, and an extremely tight rhythm section, the best tracks are the ones where Mitchell is accompanied only by her own acoustic guitar or piano. In this setting Mitchell is better able, both vocally and emotionally, to navigate the subtle peaks and valleys of her early material.

Standout tracks include a surprisingly (considering how many times she must have had to sing it, even in 1974) heartfelt and sensitive version of "Both Sides Now" and a very sweetly sung "Blue." Although by no means essential compared to her other work, the performances on Miles Of Aisles do have a certain offhandedness that may be of interest to those who think Mitchell often takes herself too seriously.

All you need of the early years!

Must be close to the best sound quality of any live album from the seventies or almost any era and has almost every great song from the first five or six years of her career. The LA Express back her up and, although their work as a group was pretty lame, this work with Joni must rank as some of the best they've done. Robben Ford on guitar, John Guerin on drums, Max Bennett on bass and Tom Scott on sax are all fantastic on this outing. Scott, for instance, is able to perfectly match his sound to Joni's voice and there are times when you don't know which is which. They do an excellent Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young type version of "Woodstock" which rocks out! This must have been an excellent concert to have been at because you can feel the warmth from both performers and audience.

Better than Blue

This album/CD is much better than the public's beloved "Blue" (just click on 15 Carey on this and compare it to "Blue"). My favorite album/CD by Joni, and the back-up band of Tom Scott and the LA Express are fantastic and compliment Joni's incomparable jazzy vocals. Buy this one!
