The book gives guidance and advice on meeting guarding problems incorporating all types of machinery. BS EN 999: 1999 Safety of Machinery is a new British and European Standard published by BSI to help protect people against the risks of going close to machinery. The standard includes guidance on minimum distances from sensing or actuating devices for protective equipment in a danger zone. The standard also includes a method for calculating distances which will protect against risks from hazards such as crushing, cutting, shearing, entanglement, trapping, abrasion, stabbing and impact. The authors describe the BSI standard and discuss techniques of hazard identification. An explanation of safeguarding techniques, the selection of safeguards, and of the types of controls used for safety is provided. The book describes types of guards and their applications, and guard materials and construction, as well as giving details of other matters affecting safeguarding. These include working practices, training and information, adjacent machinery and the effect of the working environment on safety.
