Within the past two decades, saxophonist John Ellis has been gracing audiences with his matchless tone, and a style that is rooted heavily in tradition and yet undoubtedly personalized. His latest release with his band Double-Wide, Puppet Mischief is filled with songs washed in distinct moods, and balances folk music tradition with contemporary perspective.

Double-Wide consists of Matt Perrine on sousaphone, Jason Marsalis on drums, Brian Coogan on organ, Gregoire Maret on harmonica, and Alan Ferber on trombone. This unusual orchestration is ideal for creating impressions of New Orleans funk marching bands. There is also a feeling of narrative. Each instrument’s idiosyncrasy summons a character, and as an ensemble they achieve colorful synergy.

It’s hard not to think of songs like “Carousel,” “Dubinland Carnival,” and “Hroes De Accin,” as accompanying stories or scenes, and in this way, they resemble ballet or film music. Throughout the album, Ellis takes playful solos in which the most noticeable musical devices are simply affect and ardor. This is not to say that his playing lacks virtuosity or a command of the modern saxophone vernacular. These aspects are present, but the emphasis is on the human touch, and on existing within the world that each song inhabits.

A highlight of Puppet Mischief, aside from the success of the orchestration in general, is Matt Perrine’s sousaphone playing. The instrument lends itself to a particular brand of brass band funk, and carries with it an inextricable cartoonish humor. Perrine thrives in his role as bass player, never allowing the drive to diminish, and providing an enormous timbral foundation, giving the music a broad sonic array from the ground up.

Puppet Mischief is fun and warm enough for the casual listener, but also gives musicians fodder for study in terms of orchestration, elasticity within simplicity, and an alternative to the idea that with innovation comes increasing challenges to the audience.
