Instead of concentrating on a particular era or style, such as Chicago blues or contemporary blues-rock, the compilers chose to sample from the vast array of recorded blues styles, from Bessie Smith through Lightnin' Hopkins, Charles Brown and Louis Jordan to B.B. King and Anson Funderburgh. It's not often you get to hear Mabel Scott wail "Boogie Woogie Santa Claus" and Bessie Smith pour it all out on "At the Christmas Ball" alongside Lightnin' Hopkins's blistering "Santa" or Amos Milburn's classic "Let's Make Christmas Merry, Baby," but that's the mile-wide shape of this good-times, 15-track compilation. Swingin' Louis Jordan is likewise featured on "Santa Claus, Santa Claus," while Kings Albert and B. B., John Lee Hooker, Jimmy Weatherspoon, and Lowell Fulson sharpen their axes for a mess of Christmas blues. Also included are cuts by Anson Funderburgh & the Rockets, Floyd Dixon, and Eddie C. As the holiday celebration begins to bear down, the urge to listen to some good Christmas music just seems to grow stronger. Let’s face it though -- there’s only so many times you can listen to Nat King Cole, but the problem lies in where to look for something different. Not that there isn’t a wealth of material out there. It’s just that the best songs don’t ever seem to be in the same place, and most of what you can find is a deluge of horrific renditions by the worst artists that pop music has to offer.

King’s joyous performance of Christmas Celebration, and the slow, slinking groove Louis Jordan gives to Santa Claus, Santa Claus. However, it’s really hard to go wrong with a set that also includes twelve additional tracks from masters like John Lee Hooker, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Bessie Smith, Jimmy Witherspoon, and Sonny Boy Williamson. So this holiday season, stop fretting over the lack of quality Christmas albums, and give Jingle Blues a ring.
