Carrière -guionista, entre otros, de Luis Buñuel, Jean-Luc Godard, Milos Forman, Peter Brook, Volker Schlöndorff y Andrzej Wajda y Bonitzer - que ha colaborado con Jacques Rivette, André Téchiné, Chantal Akerman, Barbel Schoroeder y algunos más - sintetizan ideas, huyen de tecnicismos inútiles y abordan directamente los aspectos más acuciantes de la materia, elaborando así una obra básica para la moderna teoría cinematográfica: una obra que utiliza toda esa claridad conceptual para establecer un ámbito de análisis mucho más amplio, una exploración de los límites entre el oficio y la creatividad, una inmersión en los intersticios de la ficción y sus relaciones con el arte cinematográfico.
