Inverse Scattering Papers, 1955-1963 (Lie groups : history, frontiers, and applications): Irvin W. Kay

The present book consists of reproductions of our papers on inverse scattering and spectral theory written in the period 1955 to 1963. We have several reasons for putting out this book.

First, the series of papers that we published in Nuovo Cimento represented an attempt to investigate systematically the underlying principles of a general formalism for dealing with inverse spectral theory and scattering in the context of quantum nechanics and other areas. The fortuitous editorial policy of Nuovo Cinento that permitted the publication of papers written in much greater detail and at much greater length than is customary in modern journals was of inestimable importance to our pursuit of this goal. Moreover, it permitted us to adopt an expository style that provided the series with tutorial value. An heuristic approach allowed us to present the essential ideas in a form that should make them more accessible to readers not acquainted with the subject of inverse scattering than a completely rigorous treatment would have permitted.

Second, because of the generality of our approach, many of the ideas presented in those papers have not yet been fully exploited and therefore may, even at this date, provide a source of research topics. Third, the formalism developed in our Nuovo Ciraento series and the other papers in this volume has proven to be a useful tool for constructing explicit potentials which lead to exact solutions of the eigenvalue problem and illustrate operators with unusual spectral properties. For example, by this means one can obtain non-local potentials for which the spectral theory can be examined with ease.

Finally, the inverse problem for the one-dimensional Schrodinger equation and the particular case of the reflectionless potentials discussed in the present volume have provided the basis of the use of the inverse spectral transform method for obtaining soliton and other solutions of certain nonlinear problems.
