More Tadrous Y. Malaty, "Introduction to the Coptic Orthodox Church". Mission San José was the 14th of the 21 missions to be built along the California coast. It was founded by Fray (the Spanish word for friar) Fermin Francisco Lasuén in 1797 and flourished until 1832. It was one of the most prosperous missions on the northern coast. The mission system was started by rulers in Spain, who thought the system would be an effective way to develop the beautiful and rich land of California. Although hundreds of American Indian tribes had made their homes in the California area for thousands of years, the Spanish thought these people were uncivilized. They didn't share the same religion, nor did they work, play, or even eat in similar ways as the Europeans. Today, we can appreciate the differences of various cultures around the world, but in the eighteenth century, the Spaniards thought they could help the Indians by making them more like the Europeans.
