A special word of thanks to all the students in University College Galway, in St. Joseph’s University Philadelphia and more recently in the National University of Ireland, Dublin, on whom this material was first tried, and who played such a major role in refining it. My thanks also to the many teachers and principals in Ireland, England, Zambia, Kenya and in Australia, who have shared their stories and helped me appreciate the work of education.
