Sometimes an album will come along that simply packs such a powerful wallop of creative artistic vision that it stops you dead in your tracks. This is one of those. Released earlier this year in her native Norway, The Guest, from the extraordinary performing songwriter Ingrid Olava, is a tour-de-force of breathtaking artistry. A virtual unknown outside of Scandinavia, Olava has nonetheless delivered one of the finest albums of recent memory, a collection of songs that could easily be dropped into a Feist/Regina Spektor/Fiona Apple medley of charismatic and intelligent piano-based art-pop, but comparisons at this point only hint at what's in store with The Guest.

The subtle balance of brooding tension and memorable melodic hooks is often a rarity as artists often sacrifice one for the other. Olava defines that dichotomy with an assured hand, finding that special place where dark, atmospheric imagery, reflecting The Guest's lyrical theme of control and power, converges with the rush of a well-turned series of perfectly sequenced notes. At times the melodies seem almost to turn and head down an off-beat path only to find their way back to the core -- and beating heart -- of the songs. "The Warrior" (see the amazing video after the jump) is a great place to start, a voluptuous, sometimes rollicking mass of lightly-held energy: rolling drums, shifting piano chords and rich organ and orchestration flourishes setting the stage for Olava's powerful but nuanced vocals. There's not a weak track in the bunch here, but we're especially fond of the beautifully theatric torch of "Love, Oh Love", swooning, passionate "The Sun" and chilling, rhythmic "Treasure and Pain".
