More A unique culture exists today in the lives of the Pennsylvania Germans, also known as the Pennsylvania Dutch. This culture's presence in the United States begins with the arrival of German-speaking immigrants in the colony of Pennsylvania between 1683 and 1783. They presented in themselves a unique cross-section of people: several religious groups, unaffiliated individuals, farm people, craft people, construction workers, and university graduates. The name Pennsylvania Dutch was given to these German-speaking immigrants by English-speaking people in America who mispronounced the German word Deutsch, meaning "folk" or "German." The beliefs and customs of the Pennsylvania German culture have endured to this day. Some Pennsylvania German groups have assimilated beliefs and customs of other cultures; still, many groups remain uninfluenced, retaining the traditions inherent to their individual backgrounds. It is of value to note that the Pennsylvania German traditions have spread far beyond the borders of Pennsylvania.
