More Illuminating the Path: The Research and Development Agenda for Visual Analytics: James J. Thomas, Kristin A. Cook (Editors) Illuminating the Path is a call to action for researchers and developers to help safeguard our nation by transforming information overload into insights through visual analytics - the science of analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces. Achieving this will require interdisciplinary, collaborative efforts of researchers from throughout academia, industry, and the national laboratories. Sponsored by the US Department of homeland Security, Illuminating the Path addresses the issues faced by analysts, border personnel, and first responders in their efforts to prevent terrorist attacks, reduce our vulnerability to terrorism, and minimize damage from emergencies that do occur This book outlines the steps to create technologies to Help people derive insight from massive, dynamic, and often conflicting data Detect the expected and discover the unexpected Provide timely, defensible, and understandable assessments Communicate these assessments effectively action. The resulting tools and technologies are intended to enable breakthroughs in homeland security, while being mindful of privacy and security concerns. These technologies will also benefit people in any field where information overload is a barrier to insight.
