Pleyel's Piano Music

Compared with the piano trios or works for string quartet, Pleyel's piano music, though of a remarkable and perhaps even unexpectedly high quality occupies a relatively modest position in the overall context of his creative work. Pleyel's compositions for piano, beyond the didactic pieces and smaller KiavierstOcke and the Klavierschule published together with J.L. Dussek, display abundantly his innate gift for melody, for a seamless and instinctively natural progression of musical ideas and melodies, as well as a clear sense for the capabilites and strengths of the fortepianos of his day; all the more remarkable since Pleyel was first and foremost a violinist. Although a good part of Pleyel's fame rests on his achievement as a pianomaker, it must be remembered that virtually all of his piano works (including the very forward-looking f minor sonata "L'Amante disperato") were composed prior to 1805 - perhaps even earlier. In terms of their aesthetic as well as the compass needed for their realization, the piano works of Pleyel were without exception conceived for the more lightly-built and transparent-sounding fortepianos of the late 18th century, such as the one heard on this recording by the Viennese makers Anton Walter und Sohn (Vienna, 1814).

Pleyel seems to have been favorably connected in the publishing world of his time. Nearly all of the published piano works were published numerous times by different publishers. Thus the

Rondo in Eb, B 613, for example, (perhaps one of Pleyel's most popular pieces) was published by Andre as op. 51, by Floffmeister as "Rondo favorit", by Pleyel, Corn and Dussek (London/Edinburgh) as well as by C.F. Peters (Leipzig) and G. RosIer (Berlin)as a "Rondo pour Harpe". The work appeared in numerous other musical journals and well into the 1911 century. The Sonatas in B-flat major and G major B 571 and 572 were published together with a third, decidedly modest Sonata in C major (and thus omitted from this recording) as Op. 13 chez Bossier Conseiller.

Pleyel's Sonata in F minor entitled "L'Amante disperato" was never published during his lifetime. Indeed, the work exists only in manuscript, suggests to us in it's somewhat operatic manner, romantic distress vented in such works as Mozart's scene "als Luise die Briefe ihres ungetreuen Liebhabers verbrannte" or Haydn's cantata for soprano and fortepiano "Arianna auf Naxos". All Europe was at the time, caught up in the feverish enthusiasm of Goethe's "Werther". This sonata thus represents a clear departure from the style of the earlier piano sonatas both in scope and in the dramatic exploitation of the resources of the fortepiano of Pleyel's day; the passionatly-charged key off minor (found also in one of his finest piano trios) was also used on occasion by Hyacinthe Jadin (whose works Pleyel also published) as well as Haydn, Schubert and Beethoven (Mozart avoided the key, generally speaking).

The remaining works on this recording (the Rondo in A major and the Andante de Bocherini reflect Pleyel's penchant for arranging the works of other composers. Both the Andante de Bocherini (published with two other sets of variations as "Airs Vane") and the final Rondo in A Major deViotti pay tribute to their composers whose works formed the basis for Pleyel's inventive - and always clearly pianistic - elaborations.
