Stewart - The Static and Dynamic Continuum Theory of Liquid Crystals: A Mathematical Introduction As the interest in macroscopic phenomena in liquid crystals and their applications in displays and devices becomes increasingly widespread, there is a growing demand for a rigorous yet accessible text suitable for graduate students, whatever their scientific background. This book satisfies that need. This text introduces the basic continuum theory, mathematics, and simple applications for liquid crystals, starting with the discussion of nematic liquid crystals in equilibria, classic static theory, boundary conditions, and equilibrium equations. The author describes electrical and magnetic field effects and the development of switching in liquid crystal displays, Freedericksz transitions, backflow and kickback phenomena, tilted fields, and classic Frank defects. The dynamics of nematic liquid crystals are resolved with derivations of the Ericksen-Leslie equations, detailed accounts of applications, a summary of dynamic equations, key concepts of nematic viscosities, and various flow alignments, effects, and problems. While liquid crystals are anisotropic materials, oscillatory shear flow, Couette flow, and Poiseuille flow are compared with isotropic fluids. The author also covers light scattering and the dynamics of smectic C and ferroelectric liquid crystals. A number of mathematical techniques and some experimental data are presented in the appendices.
