Various sessions have in particular focused on . The collection of papers in this Special Issue, originally presented at the Conference, provides new evidence on this topic. The way workers are considered by the management has changed. Their activity has not necessarily to be driven by pure cost minimising Taylorist options, but by larger objectives related to business performance. Under the new regime of management by objectives, human resource management (HRM) has developed since the 1970s to design practices, like job incentives, in order to mobilize workers as human resources (Brouwers et al., 1997). Buyens and De Vos (2001) further note that: ¡°The term HRM itself is not new; one can ?nd examples of its use 50s, especially in North America. But it is only since the 1980s that it has come to be used to denote a radically different philosophy and approach to the management of people at work ... ¡±.
