Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, and the Beatles are all here, but Wald also discusses less familiar names like Paul Whiteman, Guy Lombardo, Mitch Miller, Jo Stafford, Frankie Avalon, and the Shirelles, who in some cases were far more popular than those bright stars we all know today, and who more accurately represent the mainstream of their times.

With music there shouldn't be any standard, there never should have, that is/was just snobbery & the restriction of creativity. People like to get spoon fed & that one problem, people also imitate, that's another more serious problem when it comes to things like music. I don't think the Beatles destroyed Rock N Roll, nor did the Sex Pistols, but they simply took music in another direction, getting away from the pretense & civillized sound that hampers creativity.
