More Homosexualities (Stephen O. Murray ) Some same-sex sexual contact probably occurs everywhere. The modern, northern European and American notion that everyone who repeatedly engages in homosexual behavior is "a homosexual," a distinct "species" with unique features, is far from being universally credited. Indeed, the concept of "the homosexual" does not very well explain much of behavior, life, or categorization even in the society that popularized the model. First, not all of those involved in homosexual behavior consider themselves or are considered by others as homosexual (Reiss 1961, Humphreys 1975, Weinberg 1978), even in a city such as contemporary San Francisco in which gay is clearly recognized as a category of persons, some of who are involved in formallesbigay organizations. Second, no single type homosexual with a unique set of characteristics exists (Hooker 1957, Bell and Weinberg 1978, Roscoe 1988). In the compact (sevenmile by seven-mile) city in which I live, there is an enormous range of homosexual behaviors, typifications, self-identifications, and meanings; just as there are ranges of Latino or Chinese or Italian, working-class or upper-class behaviors, typifications, self-identifications, and meanings.
