This book reflects my long-standing interest in the modern history of the Balkans. To me, the region of Macedonia, the subject of much political and academic contestation over the decades, illustrates the complexity if not ambiguity that underwrites the politics and societies in southeastern Europe. As Chip Gagnon puts it perceptively in his accountof the 1990s Yugoslav wars, ‘‘ we can learn anything from Balkan history, it is that ethnic identities and the meanings attributed to them are fluid’’ (The Myth of Ethnic War, Cornell University Press, 2004, p. xvi). The dictionary is an attempt to sketch out, through the case of the Republic of Macedonia emerging from the rubble of disintegrating Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, a constellation of themes and issues. Rather than propagating a particular national perspective on the perennial ‘‘Macedonian Question(s),’’ I explore the shifting and contingent notions of collective belonging, the dilemmas of social and economic modernization, and the relationship between the tectonic changes of political order and everyday lifeworlds.

Genuine children of Alexander? What is that supposed to mean and in what sense? Ethnically or culturally...or how?

As far as I know Alexander himself had 2 sons that we know of: Heracles and Alexander the IV, so those were his genuine children. Tito made the connection with Ancient Macedonia for political reasons and this tactic is still going on today with the present government of FYROM. This is why it is hard to reach an agreement regarding the name of this newly founded country with Greece.This is really sad tactic if you ask me, cause it makes people hate one another, another usual tactic employed within the Balkans.

Alexander the Great and his Macedonians were of Hellenic Stock no matter how people want to distort the facts for modern political purposes...read the ancient texts and you will see what I mean ;)
