Under the editorship of Frederick D. Rossini, the volume includes sections covering many phases of the study of solids, liquids, and gases from both the theoretical and experimental standpoints. The first section is largely fundamental in presenting the various units, definitions, and laws governing the behavior of matter. Many useful concepts are covered in discussions of the equivalence of mass and energy, enthalpy, heat capacity, fugacity, ideal and real solutions, etc. Other sections treat the fundamental physics of gases, liquids, and solids and cover the topics of quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, kinetic theory, transport properties, critical phenomena, cell theories, crystal statics, and relaxation phenomena. Completing the book are sections on gases at low densities and the thermodynamics of irreversible processes.

At the conclusion of each section there is a carefully selected bibliography of pertinent books and papers.
