傳統的資料庫程式設計，必須直接在程式中硬編碼（hard code）SQL陳述，JDBC統一了Java程式與資料庫之間的操作介面，讓程式設計人員可以不用關係與資料庫特定相關的API操作，然而撰寫SQL陳述或自行封裝SQL仍是不可避免或必要的目標，而在物件導向程式設計中，物件與物件之間的關係，在匹配到關聯式資料庫中表格與表格之間的關係，並無法進行簡單的轉換以進行匹配。 Hibernate是「物件/關係對應（Object/relational mapping）的解決方案，簡寫為ORM，所謂的ORM，簡單的說就是將Java中的物件與物件關係，對應到關聯式資料庫中的表格與表格之間的關係，Hibernate提供了這個過程中自動化對應轉換的方案，相反的，也提供關聯式資料庫中表格與表格之間的關係，對應至Java程式中，物件與物件的關係。
