The Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo enshrines as "kami" (gods) the war dead deceased in domestic and international Japanese wars since the 19th century. The Japanese youths ran to the battlefield defiantly shouting "Let's meet at Yasukuni Shrine", and the dead were placed in Yasukuni. Among the enshrined were Korean and Taiwanese victimes, whose countries were under Japanese colonial rule. Sixty years after the end of the war, many Japanese regard Yasukuni as a holy place to enshrine and pay respect to those who died for the country. However, to the people of Asia who experienced the Japanese colonial rule and invasion, it is a symbol of Japan justifying the history of oppression. The gap in perception created historical and diplomatic conflict in East Asia everytime a prime minister of Japan visits Yasukuni. Ms. Lee Heeja, a Korean, lost her father when she was 13 month old. He was drafted by the Japanese army and never came back. Mr. Furukawa Masaki, a Japanese, is making an effort to let his country take responsibility for the war it waged. The two people have been fighting against Yasukuni since 2001. They dream of a peaceful world where no one experiences the sadness of losing a loved one, and no one causes that pain to others.
