Author: George Gentry, Edgar Westbury Publisher: Argus Books Ltd Date: 1977 ISBN: 0852427873 Introduction: THE efficiency of cutting tools employed in engineeringandother

craftsdependsvery largely on their correct heat treatment. The

use of carbon steelsisstill predominant and, although themethods

ofhardeningand tempering such toolsis relatively simple and

straightforward, there are many usersof these toolswhoruninto

difficulties whenattempting to harden andtemperthem.

In thepast, themethodsemployedin these processes haveoften

beengovernedmainly by rule ofthumb, and experienced tool

makers have often evolved individual methodswhichhavebeenin

somecases closelyguardedas trade secrets. Reliable practical

information on thesubjecthas beendifficult toobtain. There is,

however, no reason why even the novice should not be ableto

harden andtempertoolsquite successfully by adopting simple

methods which can be applied without the needforelaborate

equipment.

Since theoriginal edition ofthis book by George Gentry was

publishedover 30 yearsago, severallater editions have included

information on current trends in tooltechniqueand metallurgy to

keepitfullyupto date withmodern practice, while still concentrating

on basicrequirements of the smallWorkshop. In thepresentedition

the chapter on case-hardeninghasbeen completely re-written, with

more fully detaileddescriptionof thelatest processes, materials and

equipment; alsonew information on gas hardening, nitridingand

flame hardening.Other additions includereference to methods of

measuring hardness, and details of gasand electric furnaces of atype

suited to the small workshop, technical school, laboratoryorfactory.

Althoughtool bits and Welded tips have largelysuperseded forged

toolsfor lathes and other machines, the chapteron forging has been

retained, because itisveryusefulfor every toolmaker toknow how

toshapesteel by hot working under the hammer. It simplifies the

production of many tools which do not conformwithorthodoxshape,

and often effects considerableeconomy in costlytool steel. But the

heattreatment of modern high-speedsteeltools,and tippingof

tools with superhard metals such as tungsten carbide, hasnot been

neglected. In view of the increasing use oftheCentigradetempera-

ture scale, this has been used, together with equivalentFahrenheit

figures inmost heating statistics.

Although the principles ofhardeningandtemperingdo not change,

exceptin respect ofsuch new materials as are introducedin the

course of metallurgical progress, these processes maybesimplified,

and successisrendered more certain,by taking full advantage of

the modern appliances for heattreatment. pdf Buy Book at Lowest Price on Amazon
