More Guinea Pigs Have you ever gone to a pet store and seen a group of furry animals running around an open pen? If they were larger than hamsters and smaller than rabbits, then you were probably looking at guinea pigs. Guinea pigs are members of the rodent family and have been kept as pets for more than five hundred years. Today, guinea pigs are one of the most popular pets in the world. Guinea pigs originally came from the mountains and grasslands of South America where wild guinea pigs still live today. In the wild, guinea pigs live in tall grasses or in burrows. They live in groups of about ten and help each other gather food and materials for their beds and nests. Because there was little room to raise cattle in the mountainous regions of South America at the time, the natives caught and raised guinea pigs to be used for food.
