More Ground Support in Mining and Underground Construction Proceedings of the Fifth International Symposium on Ground Support, Perth, Australia, 28-30 September 2004 by E. Villaescusa and Y. Potvin The purpose of ground support is to maintain excavations safe and open for their intended lifespan. The effectiveness of a ground support strategy is important for two main reasons; namely safety to personnel and equipment and also to achieve the most economical excavation extraction. Improved ground support techniques and practices can be used to minimize rock mass instability and to maintain an environment free from injuries and fatalities. These proceedings bring together recent experiences about innovative ground support strategies, processes, and products from the top academics, operators, and technology developers from many countries. The topics covered include: case studies from mine sites, rock mass characterization for ground support and reinforcement, modeling, in-situ and laboratory testing, ground support for open pit, dynamic testing, rockfalls and failure and mechanisms, civil engineering and tunneling, design, surface support, corrosion and other means of support. The book is a valuable addition to the library of many professionals involved in the design, analysis, and implementation of ground support techniques and practices.
