Europe '72 was for me the definitive Grateful Dead album. When it came out as an expanded edition I was quite pleased. Then the Steppin' Out With The Grateful Dead box set came out and gave us a look at some of the other performances that were recorded on that tour but not used for Europe '72. Once I heard this box set I just wished that they had folded the Europe '72 album into it rather than provided alternate versions. Add to this that many of the songs on '72 were not included in the box and the reason for this compilation arises.

What we have here is both of the above mentioned albums plus Rockin' The Rhein and Hundred Year Hall folded together into a continuous show, with a little help from a couple of other sources. This is similar to what I did with the Dead Ahead/Dead Set/Reckoning super mega show I posted a couple weeks ago. I meticulously researched the 72 European tour, writing down what sets each song was played in on what date and coming up with a setlist that approximates how it would sound if the whole tour were done on one night (one very long night). Although many songs other than these were played in 72 (as shown by the Dick's Picks series) I've stuck to the available European sources, choosing not to include any of the US recordings. I also wanted to primarily use the Steppin' Out and Europe '72 albums because they were compilations, rather than any complete or near-complete shows released. The material from Hundred Year Hall and the main show of Rockin' The Rhein consists of only the songs that appear on those albums that aren't on the other sets. Loose bonus tracks were considered equal in value to the compilations.

The only place where I had to resort to using a piece of a US show was to create an ending for He's Gone. At the show where it was recorded for Europe '72 the band just fades out. Vocals were added to this later for the album, but it still fades out. A similar vocal arrangement was used in Baltimore, so I faded into that version, which continued on past that point into a jam. It didn't come to a natural ending, however, instead melding into The Other One. So I made a quick switch to the Dusseldorf version from Rockin' The Rhein to have a solid ending.

Several other songs are multi-show composites also. Making the choice of which of multiple versions of songs to use for this compilation was difficult. When picking which versions to use I tended to go with the longer versions, but performance was surely a factor. For Truckin', for example, I used the Europe '72 version because the vocal harmonies are tighter than the ones on Steppin' Out (likely studio overdubs), plus it was about 8 minutes longer when the Epilogue was included. Turn On Your Lovelight was available from two sources. I couldn't decide which one to use, so I cut them both together. On the bonus tracks for Europe 72 there's a nice medley of Good Lovin'>Caution>Who Do You Love>Caution>Good Lovin', but compared to the Caution on Steppin' Out it paled. So I combined the two versions and made a super medley out of it. Sugar Magnolia starts with thee Steppin' Out version that comes out of Dark Star, but switches to the Europe '72 version as the vocals come in. The vocals were likely studio overdubs and the harmonies are much tighter so I used that one. I had to speed up the tempo to match the intro. I also used a few small pieces from a soundboard bootleg provided to me by craymcla to space out some of the songs from E72 that I put adjacent to each other.

This virtual show consists of 55 songs, some very long, and runs a total of over seven hours. The first set is 3:14 and the second is 3:37 with an encore of nearly 20 minutes. Everything was EQd to sound consistent, with the bass boosted on most of it to match Europe '72 (I love the deep, rich sound of the bass on that album), and the highs on Europe '72 boosted a bit because the drums seemed kind of muted.

Although this will soon become obsolete with the release of "The Complete Europe '72 Concerts" 60 CD box set, it still provides an interesting "what if" show that none of those included on the box will give individually.
